crow’s nest---Is a small station on the main mast of a sailing ship that is a
gathering point for navigational information. It is rocking and rolling here!
Pre-radar sea voyages relied heavily on looking glasses and the sailors in the
crow’s nest for information. Legend has it that the Vikings carried crows nests
in cages at the top of the masts, and would let a crow loose to judge how far
away the ship was from land by timing the flight. Many thanks to Wikipedia[1]
are in order and to all the maties for the input.
