reggae---A rhythmic, spiritual, upbeat global music transmitted from the Caribbean with brass instruments, guitars, drums and echoing vocals; songs of the sea: songs of freedom. Certain artists and songs from both reggae and calypso genres have been embargoed at certain times and places throughout history on the belief that these songs of freedom were encoded plots of rebellion. These “enlightening” sound waves are music of the sea combined with the heartbeats of the crew, carrying through the air and centuries of time the same beautiful themes as literature and paintings of the sea. Some songs contain battle cries, but most are referring to the wars fought internally within each individual but highly connected crewmember. Indeed, this music contains the incoming signals from a struggling crew spanning all the way back to Africa, Europe, America, and the Caribbean in America’s colonial times, still trying to reach the ears of shipmates stationed far away.
