Pareto Optimality---A collection of
points, or barrier, from which more for
one automatically means less for someone else; a phenomenon observed by
Professor Vilfredo Pareto back in the 1800’s. Some Pareto Optimality points can
be good for a small percentage of the entire crew but really bad for the
rest.
Manufacture, transformation and exchange of goods and bads can help move towards a Pareto Optimality curve; marginal movements that help at least one person without making someone else’s situation worse: a shift upwards of at least one crew member to a higher utility curve without shifting anyone else down to a lower utility curve. The only way to break free of a bad Pareto Optimality point, at least from my point of view, is to invest in technology, infrastructure and education that will help to do a better job in the future of producing and distributing the necessities for the shipmates on this planet. Otherwise, violence, stress, speculation, lost production of goods and services, homelessness, sickness, and poverty may start to run rampant, as the win/lose battle is on to grab a flattened piece of the pie.
