Irie*** (pronounced
aye-ree) may not ever be found in a printed dictionary but here is a
rather interesting international concept. It is a popular topic of conversation
in the Caribbean among native and travelling families alike.
Kirk of Ocho Rios, Jamaica, West Indies, America responds
to the inquiry as to the true meaning of “iRie” as
follows:
“It means
everything’s good, man.”[1]
A
rather creative Jamaican gentleman, James of Adelphi Land says it
means:
“I rule
internally”[2]
A mentor Mr R says it points to the equator, many angles
of sight and centuries of music: equanimity[3].
Some Jamaicans send it up ahead as a signal of greeting
to family members[4].
A passenger
thinks it is a point up ahead where things add up right, not exactly Atlantic
City,bliss[5], Cudjoe Key, Ft. Lauderdale,
Gloccamorra[6], Key West,
Kumbaya[7], Lighthouse Point, Longport, the Mainland,
Margate, MoBay, Ocean City, Ocho
Rios, Orlando, Rio-Mar, the Southernmost Point, Shambhala[8], El Yunque, Utopia[9], Ventnor or Vieques perhaps, but at least good
enough.
Maybe it is not so much a matter of a place as it is a
matter of a place-time. Is iRie a point that can ever be reached by all aboard? It takes
a time travel to get here... a stormy ride, at least at first
anyway...

Man, pronounced “Mon” in Jamaica
where there are still "live" waves of the Queen's English, means man, woman
and child (everyone---all aboard). When things are good all
around (from here
to there/there to here), things are iRie!
