South Sea Bubble---A highly speculative stock bubble blown up and
popped in the early 1700’s in England by a large “global”corporation. It gained
monopoly slave trade rights in the Americas and South Seas in return for
financing England’s heavy national debt created by wars. Real estate and
financial markets were damaged, landing many in debtor’s prisons and
poverty.
Some decided to take to the sea along with others desiring religious freedom,
and came all the way across the "big pond"---the Atlantic Ocean.
Many from Africa were shanghaied into the slave trade, and came
across the ocean against their will in hell holes beneath deck, losing their
families, their freedom and their lives in the process. Sailors were brutally
clubbed and robbed of their freedom. Native Americans were also captured into
slavery for mining and agricultural production and many died of sickness. It
marks an extreme period of globalisation: the dawn of the Industrial
Age.
